Dr. Mohamed Nuri

Board Chairman of EPHARM & Managing Director of MEDTECH Ethiopia

I feel honored to say few statements about EPHARM. For over half a century, the factory has been playing a key role in promoting the quality of health in Ethiopia. Attaching due emphasis for quality, the factory has been discharging its responsibilities in fighting public health problems. EPHARM has stood in its entire days by the side of the people.

EPHARM is dedicated to its motto “quality is our most important product”. We always maintain our resolve and passion to uphold this motto. As a responsible pharmaceutical company, we are dedicated to improve people’s access to high-quality, demand-driven, and affordable drugs in Ethiopia. EPHARM is a pioneering company in the pharmaceutical sector, with highly motivated, well-trained, and experienced employees. The factory has become a reliable producer of drugs that meet the needs of the people in all regions of Ethiopia. We have realized that every day, EPHARM’s products are biown in the remotest villages and touch the lives of millions of people across the country.

Like in many other developing countries, the pharmaceutical industry in Ethiopia is still at an infantile stage and much needs to be done to enhance its contribution to the overall development of the nation. The local pharmaceutical manufacturing factories contribute not more than 10 % of the total demand in Ethiopia and pharmaceutical import consumes significant amount of the meager foreign currency the country earns. This is why I assert that the pharmaceutical industry has great potential to make immense contribution to Ethiopia’s economic and social transformation.

The Ethiopian government has initiated reform measures to promote the transformation of the manufacturing sector in general and pharmaceutical manufacturing in particular. I believe that these incentive packages, if properly implemented, would help to hit the nail on the head and to usher the industry into unprecedented transformation.

It seems to me that the government’s decision to make the pharmaceutical manufacturing and trade partially open to global competition signifies that the time has come where the production and marketing of the age-old drugs through the traditional labor-intensive approach can hardly help to survive, let alone to win, in the competitive market. It is in recognition of this fact that we have decided to get out of the familiar basket or what we call the “comfort zone’’ in our thoughts and practices pertaining to the organization, management, and operation of EPHARM. Among other things, we are making started to buy high-tech machinery, to introduce highly innovative system of production, to gather highly talented people, build stronger teams and establish strategic partnerships with local and international companies in order to transform EPHARM and to make it a center of excellence in pharmaceutical manufacturing in Africa.

Besides, we have learned from experience how important Research and development, people and quality are to EPHARM’s success. These factors remain to be the critical areas to which we will invest much of our time, effort, and resources in order to make EPHARM truly world class. Particularly the factory has given priority attention to Research and Development activities. We are now on the verge of completing preparation to manufacture new drugs. I strongly believe that these measures would help to achieve our vision of making EPHARM one of die three best pharmaceutical manufacturing factories in Africa in 2025.

This document is prepared to provide our stakeholders with comprehensive information about EPHARM. I hope that it gives highlights about our sense of mission and vision; who EPHARM is, what it is doing, and where it strives to reach.

Brief History of EPHARM

1964

historyThe company started production on June 1964 as Ethiopian dmg Manufacturing Shack. (EDMSC) after the memorandum of Agreement was signed between the British company Smith& Nephew Associated Companies Limited, SANACO (50%) and the Imperial Ethiopian Government (IEG). After two years of operation the Company reported significant loss and had even been closed for nine months.

1967

history2The Government decided to buy 50% share of the British company and lured General Manager from Hungary. New formularies and manufacturing process were developed; in process control was introduced through technical assistance received from MEDIMPEX, Hungary. In spite these bold reform attempts; the company was still not able to curb its loss.

1970

history3Following the international bid for interested investors to participate in a reorganized pharmaceutical company, an agreement was signed between the Imperial Government of Ethiopia and TEV of Israeli, the former holding 51% Share. The factory was reestablished in April 1970 As Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Manufacturing (EPHARM). From 1970 to 1974, with the improved motto‘’Quality is our Most Important Product” the factory was producing about 130 pharmaceutical products which included tablets, syrups, ointment, injectable and capsules. It started making a profit.

EPHARM was nationalized on 2 February 1975 following the popular revolution that resulted in the demise of the imperial regime. The number of products of the factory by then was reduced from 130 to 80 Basic drugs and latter to 44. The building of IV Fluid & ORS (Oral Rehydration Salt) plant with the aid of UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) was one of the Fundamental achievements of the time. The factory was then merged with the state owned Pharmaceuticals and Medical Supplies Import and Distribution Corporation. It was structured as a branch of EPHARMECOR.

1994

epharm-bldgAfter the downfall of the socialist regime, the factory was re-established as an independent public enterprise under the directory of Public Enterprises Supervising Authority on 13 February 1994. Then it was recognized as Share Company and has continued its usual duty with and increased productivity PROFILE and higher profitability.

2014

In line with the government’s program to privatize public enterprise, MEDTECH Ethiopia, the major customer of EPHARM by then, bought the factory in September 2014. Since then, it has been working aggressively to transform the factory to a greater level and make it competent than it was ever before.
